What Is the Average Ring Size?

For women, for men, and what actually determines yours.

The most common ring size for women is US 6 to 6.5 (about 16.5–16.9 mm inner diameter), and for men it is US 9 to 10 (about 19.0–19.8 mm). Roughly half of all women's rings sold fall between US 5 and US 7, and half of men's between US 9 and US 11. But "average" is a starting point, not an answer — hands vary enormously, and a ring that's even half a size off is noticeably uncomfortable. If you can measure, measure.

What actually determines ring size

Height and weight correlate loosely with finger size, but far less than people assume — plenty of tall people have slim fingers and vice versa. The real factors are finger length and knuckle shape, which finger the ring is worn on, and even climate: fingers can change by half a size between a cold morning and a hot afternoon. Your dominant hand typically runs about half a size larger than the other.

Buying a surprise engagement ring? Sizing up beats sizing down: a ring that's slightly large can be worn on the day and resized afterwards, while one that doesn't fit over the knuckle ruins the moment. When forced to guess for an average-built woman, US 6.5 is the statistically safest single choice — but borrowing a ring she wears on the correct finger and matching it on our on-screen sizer or the printable chart beats any statistic.
